Resources for collective healing and social change

Frameworks, groups, and campaigns that shape our work — from the Power Threat Meaning Framework to grassroots organising and creative resistance.

See Me Before the PD Group
See Me Before the PD

The See Me Before The PD group is a collective of trainers and speakers who aim to promote a positive image of people who are given a label of 'personality disorder' or identify as having a 'personality disorder'.

The Power Threat Meaning Framework
Power Threat Meaning Framework

The Power Threat Meaning Framework inspires and informs much of the work of Community Psychology Reclaimed. The PTMF shows how we can respond to severe emotional distress without hiding the social causes behind the misapplication of medical thinking to social and psychological issues.

Misogyny in Mental Health
Misogyny in Mental Health

Medical misogyny refers to the systemic, ingrained bias and discrimination against women within the healthcare system, where their symptoms, pain, and health concerns are frequently dismissed, ignored, or normalized by medical professionals.

Within our mental health systems there has been historical and continued pathologization of female emotions, where complex psychological conditions are reduced to being "overly emotional," or "hysterical", preventing humane care and treatment, and often leading to iatrogenic harm through pathologising labels such as 'Borderline Personality Disorder'.

Racism in Psychology
Racism in Psychology

What we recognise as science is dominated by white European culture and interests. The interdependence of all peoples and the natural world was understood by our ancestors, but in recent Centuries we have lost our way and our humanity has been diminished. Either by being subject to systematic racism or through being complicit within it.

There is much to unlearn and rediscover as work is done towards unravelling the harms of colonialism. The world map we are used to seeing is distorted so that Europe and North America is made to seem larger than it actually is relative to the continent of Africa and South America. This resource provides examples of how psychology can be recovered from the scientific racism it has been embedded within.

Psychologists for Social Change

Psychologists for Social Change is a network of applied psychologists, academics and therapists who are interested in applying psychology to policy and political action. The group started in 2014 to address growing concerns about austerity policies.

One of our central missions has always been to encourage more psychologists to become involved in political and social action. We also aim to disseminate psychological knowledge and research in ways that are relevant to current policy concerns.

Psychologists for Social Change NI have been part of Pride since we became active in Northern Ireland.

Recovery Through Social Action

Thích Nhất Hạnh taught how activism can be supported by mindful contemplation practices. That protest can be peaceful. Extinction Rebellion use street theatre to draw attention to the 6th Mass Extinction.

The aim is to engage emotion and reduce antagonism. The Red Rebel Brigade participate in protests about the climate crisis and publicly mourn for the loss of biodiversity due to the climate crisis.

Being a Red Rebel is an experience of engaging in peaceful performance protest.
